I just saw this newly released picture of Dwayne Johnson clothed in the skin of the Nemean lion from his upcoming epic,
Hercules (pictured immediately below) and it made me think, how many artists have tried to capture Hercules over the years? Beneath the set photo of "The Rock" in his role are a few of the artistic representations.

Here's one called "The Drunken Hercules" by Peter Paul Reubens.

So do you think Dwayne Johnson's version (top picture) is the best? I sure do. I'm actually getting excited to see this picture. I just hope it's better than
Clash of the Titans. Dwayne sure is putting a lot of himself into this role. If you want to know more about what I think of Dwayne Johnson and read the

Definitely beats the Disney version.
ReplyDeleteYou forgot Kellan Lutz's Hercules :)
ReplyDeleteThere's no way he can ever top the likes of Steve Reeves, Lou Ferigno, and dubbed Arnold Strong (aka Schwarzenegger)
ReplyDeleteHercules will always be Lou Forrigeno to me (even if I can't spell his name)... and so will the Hulk.
ReplyDeleteBut the Rock is pretty charismatic on screen. I kind of wish they'd rolled the Marvel version of Hercules into a movie. But I guess having more than 2 per year is probably pushing it.
Anyway, I love the Ken Barthelmey version, even if it looks a bit more like Conan than I'd prefer.
Yeah, Dwayne's is OK, but Disney's is by far and away the best.
ReplyDeleteAhem.
NOT.
Disney's looks so goofy in retrospect
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to it, yes I agree, awesome! I still think he'd make a great Detective Quaid! LOL
ReplyDeleteI like the first photo. The Rock is fun to watch in movies. But, Disney makes everything palatable.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to it. I didn't care for the Disney version either.
ReplyDeleteHey, Mike,
ReplyDeleteYou know Dwayne in cool with me in any role.
It is a great pic and the movie should be good, but will it hold up to the classic stop motion version? We'll see.
ReplyDeleteWowee wow! This is amazing news! I didn't know this movie was happening and I'm so excited now! And yes it had better not FAIL like Clash of the Titans.
ReplyDeleteMy word that artwork of Dwayne Johnson as Hercules is stunning.
I'm a big fan of Rubens who painted this theme too many times to count, although this version isn't one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteDwayne's great but I have to pick Hercules vs. Hydra by Ken as the best. Dwayne can act so I'm hopng for the best with Hercules.
ReplyDeleteI didn't even recognize him as Dwayne. Makes me want to see the movie.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Dwayne's the best! I love him, I really do. A man who has that many muscles and that gentle and genuine of a smile AND who does movies for kids? Rare in the best of ways :)
ReplyDeleteI would've never guessed that was the Rock..but it's a great image.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I can't say which one is the best but I like Dwayne's the best. It really is remarkably good.
ReplyDeleteI do love Dwayne's depiction, but that Boris one comes real close :)
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend Michael.
........dhole
This has made me hugely excited for Johnson's Herc.
ReplyDeleteThat is TOO awesome. I love the Rock.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's been too long, Michael--I've missed you! I need to catch up on all your updates.
I didn't even recognize him as Dwayne... I think it's the facial hair that threw me. Anyway, you know my type in men so I'll just leave it at that.
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings about Hercules. I blame my 8th grade English teacher for instilling a general dislike of Greek mythology.
ReplyDeleteOf all Greek mythology he was not my fave so I probably won't go to the movie but the artwork is good. The top one is definitely the best.
ReplyDeleteAnd then there's Ryan Gosling as Young Hercules. Didn't have quite the muscles he has today.
ReplyDeleteWow, that first one is striking. Amazing!
