A Gaga-riffic Weekend

Faith is not a gift that I ever received, but I can respect those that do have it as long as it isn't used to destroy human rights. Thus, I was curious what this icon had to say about the topic. When asked by Larry King what her feelings toward religion and the church were in general, Gaga replied in a very candid fashion, "I struggle with my feelings with the church and that really, religion and the church are completely separate things. In terms of religion I'm very religious, I was raised Catholic...but at the same time there is no one religion that doesn't hate, speak against, or be prejudiced against another racial group, religious group, sexual group...and for that I think religion is also bogus. So, I suppose you could say that I'm a religious woman who's confused about religion that dreams of a future where we have a more peaceful world for the younger generation."

Lady Gaga was born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta and raised Catholic. Her inspiration was glam rock. Her fuel is fame itself. What she does with her fame, however, is amazing.

What has she shown writers?

<=== 1) To bare your soul.  To not be afraid to show your most personal inner self to the world through your writing.  This is where the good stuff lies and many of us shy away from it for fear of being judged.  Lady Gaga gets judged every day of her life and does she care? Not one bit

2) To dance in your underwear when you have cause to celebrate. When was the last time you finished that extraordinarily difficult manuscript that you've been laboring over to produce and got up from your chair and just danced? You owe it to yourself to do this...it'll feel amazing and you totally deserve to feel amazing. Writing is hard.

3) Lady Gaga showes us that if you live in America, when you add amazing looking men to anything, it makes the production that much better and makes a hell of a lot of money. Stephanie Meyer knew this, Hollywood knows this, the CW (creator of Smallville, the Vampire Diaries, and Supernatural) knows this, and young adult writers know this. But do you know this?

I'm seeing Lady Gaga in concert this Saturday and I can't wait.  She's a living legend and she's going to be at Energy Solutions Arena in downtown Salt Lake City (the place where I live).
Have a Gaga-riffic weekend!

  2. After a long time some one spoke up without being afraid of their parents. If only people understood their own religion first and spent time in doing good rather tan be critical of others this world would be peaceful. Go, Lady Gaga:)

  3. Demitria: I hadn't planned on it. I got too fat to take much joy in clothes right now. I'm trying to downsize so that I can buy good ones for the summer.

Munir: here here I say :) hehe thanks for commenting!

  4. Have fun! Love her or hate her, a person should admire and respect her for being honest when it might not be popular to do so. I like that she speaks her mind.

  5. Lady Gaga rocks! She is an intelligent and outspoken person, and for that she will always be villified by some sections of society. That she has the guts to do what she does says a lot about her strength. She's a heck of a musician, composer and songwriter too. Love her.

  6. Thanks for visiting my blog, it means a lot to me. I know sometimes I am the one to put my foot in my mouth. I want to raise my grandchildren to be good people who love every single life on this planet and may be on other planets too.

  7. No we don't live in Chicago. We live in a suberb of New York. But if there is a Sal's in Chicago and we visit there I am sure my husband would love to go there.

  8. I'm not too up to date on pop culture, I used to be, but these damn kids keep changing it. Now it's not so popular anymore. All my Seinfeld references seem to be falling upon deaf ears.

But faith scares me a bit, not because the religion behind it is good or bad, but because folks have a tendency to place their personal fears and prejudices smack dab in the center of their faith. It can be tough to separate them after a while.

    Have fun

  9. I like Lady Gaga's music - even though I rolled my eyes at her weird clothes and the whole "shock value" thing at first...but now that I know more about her, I like her even more. She stands up for what she believes in. I was reading an article the other day where Malaysian radio stations won't play the chorus of "Born This Way". So she's told them to either play the whole thing, or stop playing her music at all. There aren't too many other artists out there who will put their money where their mouth is. Have to admire that!

  10. I think it's sad that so many religions teach people to judge and hate others. That should never be what faith is about. On a lighter note, I hope you have fun at the concert. I hear she is amazing live!

  13. Sorry, but isn't she just Madonna 2.0?

  14. Fantastic post! :) that's all I can say. Have a great time at the concert.

  15. Thanks everyone :), I totally plan on having an amazing time.

Mutt: Well that is a really good comparison. However, Madonna faded away years ago. I think Lady Gaga can successfully fill her shoes and do things a bit better than her. I think that Lady Gaga definitely has her star power and is more focused on the world at large than Madonna. It's interesting that both were raised Catholic.

  16. Love or hate her, she's fascinating and I love her artistic style. Because she is outspoken, there will always be those who dislike her. But isn't that always the way it is. So be it!
Have a great time! Rock away!

  18. I have never, ever, ever thought about Lady Gaga like this in terms of writing. And what she said about religion is really interesting. She's going to change the world. Maybe Gaga should run for president. ;)

  19. I hope you had a great time! Looking forward to hearing all about the concert. (Also, you left the rice paddle here - shall I try bringing it by some time?)

  20. And it seems like she's a totally sweet person to boot :) Bring on the concert review!

  21. I find it sad that religions tend to be exclusive to the point of infringing on individual freedoms. And yet that rejection of "other" comes with a message to be kind to your neighbor. The hypocrisy is why I'm spiritual, but not religious. Can't wait to hear about the concert!

  22. I like what you're saying about writing in this post, but I don't know if Lady Gaga is really the right analogy. First, I'm a music snob, and I disagree with most of your assessment of the value of her music. I find the actual music a bit too easy and her lyrics puerile. (But it is fun. There's nothing wrong with fun music.) Second, her style and behavior are an act. Musicians and celebrities have been doing the outrageous thing for years, some more successfully than others. She's been very successful at it. And that's great, but not something that's built to last.
Please don't take this as a negative statement on your blog. I like what you have to say and the way you say it. Thanks.
    It Just Got Interesting
