I have to admit...I'm a little intrigued by this photo. It's become the most iconic picture of the 2011 Vancouver riots following their loss of the Stanley Cup. I guess media is trying to find out the story behind this. It has an air of high romance to it (in my opinion). The guy and the gal are both comely, look like they're deeply in love, and whatever is happening in their lives obviously takes second place to how they feel about each other while a city burns down around them.
I wonder what's going on here... I smell a Pulitzer prize for the reporter that nails this story especially if it is a good one. Here's a link to an article that tells a little more about it and the photographer that got the picture.
What do you guys and gals think is going on here? Do you think it was staged? It makes me want to write a story set in Vancouver during all this lol. Ice hockey is such serious business.
If you go out this weekend for Father's Day and happen to go to the Alamo Drafthouse, don't talk or text on your phone cause they'll kick you out. This is an actual voicemail they got from one such angry customer. I laughed my ass off:

Michael you old romantic. Haven't you ever had hot sex with a stranger in the middle of a riot? It's the only reason most riots happen. although usually there aren't that many girls...
ReplyDeleteIt looks staged to me.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't assume these are people in love so much as people in lust.
I find it fascinating that folks use the constitution to justify doing whatever they want, simply because it is the USA and this decree gives people certain rights.
ReplyDeleteThere are many countries in the world with the same laws--you don't see their people saying things like , "This is Britain, where I am free to text in a fucking theater!" --.--
Some Americans need to get that star spangled banner our of their ass and get a moral conscious!
Now that my rant is done, I found her to be HILARIOUS, and I'm bookmarking this to share. :D
Thanks Mike!
I agree with Ted Cross and can empathise with T. D. McFrost - - very unlikely to happen over here in Britland :o)
ReplyDeleteIt probably is staged, but maybe so was that one in Times Square after WWII ended.
ReplyDeleteI hate people who talk or text on their phone when they go up to a counter to order, but while I'm waiting for my food (or waiting to get in) at a normal restaurant why can't I talk or text? Or in my case I play Solitaire on my phone--my phone is too pathetic to have Angry Birds on it.
The photo is so hard to believe, I assume it's been tampered with. Or they're really drunk.
ReplyDeleteI read on the BBC or the Telegraph that the couple aren't actually kissing (they've identified the guy). Rather the guy's girlfriend got knocked over and he was trying to make sure she was ok.
ReplyDeleteMy understanding of the Alamo Drafthouse is that there are signs and warnings everywhere that say you will be thrown out is your phone is on. This woman is obviously clueless. And it's a great advertisement for those who want to see a movie where there is no texting allowed.
ReplyDeleteSteph: Oh how mundane. I'd envisioned a much more passionate story to go with the picture. Perhaps she had a brain tumor and only months to live and had told her handsome boyfriend that it was her dying wish to see a Stanley Cup game. During the game, she started feeling ill and they left to get to the hospital but didn't make it. Then the riot started and he held her to keep her safe while all the bad stuff happened.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree that the photo looks staged, although I love the idea behind it. Either way it's still a beautiful photo! And that video is quite funny. :)
ReplyDeleteAlyson: You can't believe in this photo yet you blog about yetis, gremlins, ghosts, snarks, and goblins? O.o.....
ReplyDeleteExcellent post today Michael. I found myself staring at the picture with an absurd look on my face.
ReplyDeleteAnd the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin is an awesome venue. If ever I am back in Austin I will go out of my way to return there for a movie and beer.
look, look, two posts in one. I swear officer, I only pressed the publish button once.
ReplyDeleteHere's what Yahoo! says about it:

Oh how heroic of him to come to her aid. Thanks for linking that Mutt. I can't wait til the movie is made about these star-crossed lovers.
ReplyDeleteAw that's such a cute photo. :-)
ReplyDeleteHilarious message.
Such a great photo! There seems to be a lot of speculation as to whether or not it was staged. I also read she was hurt, and her boyfriend was comforting her. Then I read an article where it said "The boy, who she may or may not have known..." and though, Holy hell, I need to go to more riots if that's the sort of random stranger action I'm missing out on.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I had already read an article about the two kissing fools. Hey, who am I to question the strange. It had that whole "Speed" feel to it. Well, there are worse ways to get your 15 minutes of fame :)
ReplyDeleteI really don't know what to make of the Alehouse story. Another strange one. If there really are signs up everywhere, then ignorange is no excuse. I'm not a texter or phone call person, but still seems a bit ridiculous rule to me if you're not making any noise to distract from the show. No phone calls, sure; no texting - weird.
Makes me wonder how they treat customers who speak/or whisper to their companions during the feature. Or how patrons order another round.
OK, I admit, I'm probably missing the whole concept of the alehouse . .
......dhole
I don't know if it is staged but it gets your attention. The photographer accomplished the shock factor enough for the photo to be out there.
ReplyDeleteI also thought it looked staged! Or Photoshopped! Apparently she got knocked down, and he just gave her ONE KISS to calm her down.
ReplyDeleteThe feeling in the city is a bit weird right now. Everyone's being EXTRA EXTRA nice and positive and friendly and courteous. I swear I saw someone stop at a yellow light, just the other day. :-) YELLOW! :-)
