Netflix channels a very honorable superhero in Luke Cage who slugs it out with the thugs of Harlem

A lot of care went into filming Luke Cage. The acting is superb, the story is riveting, and the hip-hop soundtrack is awesome. In watching the first two episodes, I loved how the music is so thoughtfully used to complement the visuals and the story. Another thing I'm really taken with is Luke Cage's character. He's a very honorable super hero, and he probably has more integrity than even Captain America. I mean, Cap was used by the government and compromised some of his ideals from time to time. That doesn't seem to be happening at all with Cage. Or maybe it's just that Luke Cage's ideals align better with normal people. Perhaps that's what I'm picking up on.

Anyone else take a turn at binge-watching Luke Cage on Netflix?

  1. I've watched four episodes and I'd noticed that about the music. I like how well it integrates with the action.

  2. I didn't know much about Luke Cage before I started watching but really liked it. The story isn't inventive nor does it take many chances but I don't blame the showrunner. This is a show about a bulletproof black man in New York. In today's America it would be easy to offend someone/everyone unless the character played it straight down the middle. Even then I saw one star reviews that complained the cast was 80% black. Really? Whites are under represented in one movie and it upset someone enough to leave a negative review? Unbelievable.

You have to give Netflix credit for breaking new ground. They created the first modern portrayal of a female superhero and now put a black superhero in a title role. The story built nicely over the course of the season and gave a satisfying finish while also setting up with Iron Fist/Defenders. I can't wait for the next installment.

  4. I watched all episodes between Friday to Sunday and I will say it was a really good show. The first episode was iffy for me and took me long time to watch because several things including pacing didn't work for me. But I decided to give at least two to three episodes a try and from towards the end of episode one and then definitely episode two, I really started feeling the show beyond select characters and a banging soundtrack. The season was amazing and in the end I gave it four stars. While yes it does have mostly blacks, there is nothing wrong with that. Especially when even today a lot of movies still have mostly white casts in them. Things are changing but I find it sad when people will blast one series for a mostly single race-set or non-white but rain praises and ignorance when it's all white. I don't care about what race Luke Cage is for the most part. I'm black yes but I'm usually color blind for my entertainment. Also Hollowood needs to remember that one subjection of black culture does not represent all blacks. I'm a black woman from the Caribbean. Sorry but Harlem is not the crown jewel of my race/culture. A nice piece for the world though, no question. Anyway I really enjoyed the show and definitely want to see Season Two.

  5. I've certainly been binge watching Luke Cage. I'm almost done with the series, and like the other Marvel/Netflix shows, it's pretty great.

  6. Sorry, I don't get Netflix so I haven't seen this show, but it sounds impressive. On the other hand, I just finished season four of Game of Thrones and want to race through the next two seasons (if only I had the time). Progress!
