The Claimed episode of the Walking Dead dropped the one carrot I really want but can I trust it

Has this guy figured out the apocalypse? He did say he's a lot smarter than
his friend Abraham Ford. I guess we'll see.
Of course last night's Walking Dead was excellent. And added to the joy of watching all the shows that I love is the fact that the Nielsen's are paying me to keep a television diary for one week! Squee! Seriously, the Nielsen ratings should just always consult me on what's great and what ain't. But there is something gnawing away at me, and it primarily concerns the "claim" that Eugene (who is a scientist) somehow knows what started the zombie apocalypse.

So can the show actually survive this kind of revelation? I mean, IF the show goes there (and keep in mind that this is what I called a big "IF") will the explanation actually be satisfying? If it's a disease, well we've been there done that. If it's some other thing like the tail of a comet that came close to the Earth and bathed it in weird radiation or a religious explanation like "when there's no more room in Hell the dead shall walk the earth" will we like that answer?

I don't think I will. So the other thing that occurs to me is that this "carrot" that they are dangling in front of me is just a red herring. That something will happen to Eugene just prior to him opening his mouth seems like the most likely scenario. Hmm. Honestly, this show has gone a lot further than I ever thought possible with zombies, and it keeps surprising me at every turn. I look forward to seeing what they come up with next. But this "claim" by Eugene? I'm not sure I can trust it.

  1. Still trying to catch up with last season. Cool you are part of the Nielsen ratings.

  2. I'm surprised you posted today. My calendar says today is Dia de la Bandera in Mexico.

The guy will probably gather everyone to give his explanation and then as he starts a zombie will burst in and eat him "Deep Blue Sea" style.

At some point do you suppose they'll find some baby or kid who is immune to the zombie thing and thus becomes the Chosen One? I mean while we're throwing cliches out there.

  3. I don't see how they can go into it. I've started to read the comics and I don't think they ever go into what started it all. I'm not sure there is a revelation that would make viewers completely satisfied so why go there?

  4. The writers have been so clever so far I think they'll save the how and why until the end of the series to give us a 'stay with you forever' send off.

  5. I definitely don't trust Doctor Mullet.

And how cool is it that you're getting paid to keep a television diary? That's awesome.

  6. And now I hate the fact that I don't have my cable, but I'm glad they're dangling this carrot. It's about time they did. As for the comet and the religious explanation, my thoughts exactly. You'll see why. :)

  7. I did the Nielsen thing years ago. It was back when we had to write out viewing habits in a booklet. I'm sure they've made it all online these days.

Still have yet to see one episode of this show. I know, I'm missing out.

  8. They haven't dealt with how the disease started in the comics so interesting that they're taking it on with the tv series.

  9. That says a lot about the quality of the show that you're not sure if you can trust a big reveal. Nice.

Sometimes they must do the thing we think they cannot do, for it takes the story to a much better place. Although it might not seem like it at the time.

  10. Yeah, they'll drag that question out for a LONG time. It even makes me want to know, and to be truly satisfying it must be something unique and amazing.

  14. How great you're now getting paid to watch TV. Any chance your comments on your fave shows are heeded by the producers or by Nielson? Now that would be power.

  16. Well the previous showrunner, Glen Mazzara, stated the reason why was irrelevant unless it led to a new story.

Maybe Scott Gimple has that something planned?

I don't know, it seems the specifics are always irrelevant - hence why we only ever got vague hints in the George Romero movies.

  19. Congrats on the television diary gig. Whatever this carrot may lead to it better not be a black eye for The Walking Dead.

  21. I liked this episode too, it reminded me of the previous show runner and creator who was much better in writing episodes than the current one who often has empty and slow paces and scenes. This episode had the good old feeling.
