Because my mind sometimes ruminates on dark thoughts, and also because I've gotten permission from the mom of the two teens that watch movies with me to introduce them to the Alien franchise, I'm posting some of my favorite fan art that has been created over the years to celebrate Alien. Enjoy.

They must be young teens if they haven't already seen the movies.
ReplyDeleteFirst one is fan art? Impressive.
They are pretty young. David just turned 14 and his sister Moira just turned 17. Emotionally, she's a year or two behind her peers in school, and the school she goes to is adjusting the curriculum accordingly. They also come from a family that didn't watch really anything until they met me. We kind of clicked, and it's been fun filling their brains with movies. I haven't gotten permission yet to show them "The Silence of the Lambs." I usually pick movies that have significant influence in pop culture. "Silence of the Lambs" is one that not only showcases real life monsters, but is the only horror movie to ever win "Best Picture" at the Academy Awards. So it's a significant achievement. We did watch Terminator this last week, and are scheduled to watch Terminator 2 in 4K this upcoming week.
DeleteSo are you starting with Alien or Prometheus?
ReplyDeleteOh I'm starting with Alien by Ridley Scott, in a hopefully extended cut edition if I can find it with the highest resolution possible (it's not available in 4K so I'll see if there are any Criterion collection editions out there). I'm also planning on inviting my friend Darcy over, who is a HUGE Alien fan...even bigger than me...so that we can kind of do a combined presentation on H.R. Giger and how (at the time) the xenomorph was something no one had ever seen. We'll also talk about how Ridley Scott and H.R. Giger ended up hating each other. Titanic egos that clashed over the making of the film.
DeleteThe only ones that I have slated to show are Alien and Aliens. I never liked Alien 3 or Alien 4 so I kind of pretend that they don't exist. I don't like the direction the franchise took following Aliens. Additionally, I don't intend to show Prometheus or Alien: Covenant because those movies still don't make much sense to me. Ridley Scott needs to connect them to the original Alien. Right now it just seems like it's a completely new story. Tonally, I loved the direction Prometheus was going with the Engineers and the ancient otherworldy cities. But all of that got destroyed in Covenant and we were back to an alien just running around killing people. The most interesting part of Covenant was the Engineer homeworld and we only get a glimpse of it as David destroys it by unleashing the biological weapon on the population. I don't blame Ridley Scott for the story. He wanted to tell one that was heavy on the mythology, but caved to studio pressures that was created by a toxic fanbase that demanded the appearance of the xenomorph.
I enjoyed Alien and Aliens but after that I didn't care that much for the series. Some great artwork though.
ReplyDeleteThose are amazing posters. There are some really talented artists out there.
ReplyDeleteThis is some very impressive art, but once I saw Alien and Aliens I couldn't watch them again because of the gore. Yet I don't have a gore problem with about 98% of Silence of the Lambs.
