There Are Days When...

I Weep For the Future...
Because more people watch this than know who the Speaker of the House of Representatives is.

Because these are the celebrity role models that the press writes about.

Because this is what your kids would rather do than read a book.

Because this man is a published author and on the most popular show on MTV of all time.

Because this is so so true.

Because I know people who feel that this really is being treated well.

Because wealth and beauty is all that matters.

I have no idea on what the fuck is going on here. But I do know that this is/was a POPULAR kids show.
...This needs no explanation.

Incoming Twitter/Facebook post and video uploaded to YouTube.

  1. oh my goodness..is that the proper exclamation? or should it be OMG?

  2. Michael. There is nothing wrong with Teletubbies. It is excellent. Otherwise, good points all.

  3. I advise against rewatching the Breakfast Club. What once for me the ultimate teenage movie has become a story about a hardworking hero who is trying to keep 5 obnoxious kids in line. The fact that the kids get the last line in the movie is galling. I can't believe this used to be one of my favorite films. :P

Nothing has changed in the last twenty year except two things - you got older and the internet.

  4. Wow. That's all I can say about that last one. People are so effed up.

  5. Kevin: I think I shall take your advice and not revisit the Breakfast Club. I prefer to think back on it fondly.

  6. I hope things get better here, because the rest of the world copies America.

  7. Exactly. A pity fest does sound in order.

  8. and what's the obsession that so many people have with celebrities? Since when were they the authority on how to do life at it's best?

  9. Hey! Summer is my favorite month too!!

Seriously though, I loved this post. It made me laugh and it made me nod and go "yep." I couldn't agree more.

  10. Makes you wonder what some people think eh? Because your particular clips can be seen as depressing, amusing, are OMG what the hell!

I had no idea people were posting their video to YouTube as they go in labour. But I assume that's a direct result of the first few photos... no? I can't speak for anyone, but that IS NOT a moment I wanted on the Internet, bad enough I was there. lol. Brave people.

  11. *sigh* I SO hear you. I think Reality TV is a serious symptom of the dumming of the population. I have no CLUE how it all happened. It's funny though--I am editing my book about the teen ghost from the 60s as they reopen the hospital she commited suicide in as a reform school, and a number of these things are things she notices (is shocked by)--the ease of swearing, the casual attitude about teen pregnancy, the mental illness and violence that seem so... normal... I'm not sure locking people away is ever a good idea, but there certainly was something to trying to modify behaviors... to educating young people on what being a real adult was... but instead adults now are all trying to be teenagers, so what message are teens SUPPOSED to get out of that?

  12. I feel like putting my head in a oven right now.
FYI, I know who the Speaker of the House is: John Edwards.

    ReplyDelete
  13. "in AN oven"
And in case you were wondering, the Edwards thing was a joke...not funny? *sigh* I tried.

  14. Michael,

Those are only the people you SEE. They attract attention because they're so rare. If the news and the internet reflected reality, MSN would have a headline that says something like "99.9% of kids did not do drugs even once this week." And we wouldn't read it.

Think of the many moms who were NOT just acquitted of killing their babies. None of them were on Nancy Grace's show.

So when people like Lindsay Lohan attract attention, or polls show that more people know who Homer Simpson is than the speaker of the house, just remember that they're not the ones making the important day-to-day decisions.

  15. Hehehehe yeah.... Luckily for me, I have cultivated a very dark and twisted sense of humor. ^_^

  16. Is the Speaker of the House that orange Boehner (Boner) guy? I didn't really keep up after the elections last year. But I could probably quote that entire Simpsons episode to you. The reason: I give a crap about the Simpsons and not as much about idiot Republicans. Misplaced priorities? Probably. But all I can do in democracy is vote for my area; I can't control what all these other idiot states are doing.

  17. Ha ha! Seriously. This post is awesome. And totally true. :) Thanks for the laugh!

  18. Boy, do I know what you mean. I can't believe that Telletubby (sp) picture. I have heard that there are subliminal messages that come through in cartoons/animations, etc. If this isn't a sampling, I don't know what is. Showed this to someone else and she couldn't believe this is something for kids. All of these pictures do make me wanna weep. Boggles the mind too.

  19. Oh wow. You're right. There ARE days when I'm afraid for the future.

  20. Ewwwwwwwww, texting birth? You finished me with this. Now I might as well go in a hole and pray for the world to end next year. :P

Summer is my favorite month.. spoken like a true blonde on facebook. Because blond jokes are no longer funny enough. *sigh* Thanks for always entertaining!

  21. The teletubbies made me laugh. The rest is pretty dang sad.

At the observatory, I've now asked almost every week, "The sun is a star?"

    ReplyDelete
  22. Homer has complete control of his stomach muscles. That is impressive. I've never seen a speaker of the House perform a similar feat. No wonder he's not as popular.

    The Teletubbies thing...damn.

  23. When you put it that way, we're doomed!

Actually, I knew we were doomed anyway.

I do love The Simpsons. AND I know the speaker of the house. How can I not with a name like that?

  24. This is what I worry about every day at the library. Even many of the librarians don't read books!!!! As for the rest of the population? I lament every day that the most checked out item at the library are the DVDs. If we depended on books, I am not sure we'd even need libraries. Well, people do need the computers to do job searches... We are a civilization in decline, make no mistake.

  25. Funny! Yeah, well, maybe not so much.

Unless I hear a tornado warning siren, I no longer turn on the TV. Reality TV killed the joy. But it's cheap and easy to produce, and thereby embraces two key American values.

I know the Speaker of the House, because I *read* newspapers. Yep, part sociologist, part writer, part walking anachronism.

  26. Lol some of those fb posts are hilarious!
