Deep Blue is the name of one gargantuan great white shark and it's just stunning to watch these guys high five it

I love Shark Week. I've been watching the programming (including Shark Week After Dark), and I've seen megamouth sharks, goblin sharks, bull sharks, and of course great white sharks. For me, it's all about size and these guys filmed the largest great white shark ever recorded on film. It's name is "Deep Blue" and they measured it using a buoy called "Chewy" and discovered it was 22 feet long. It's also got a MASSIVE girth meaning it's pregnant with somewhere in the neighborhood of ten five foot long sharks. I have to say, these guys that do the filming are insane. One of the divers high five's "Deep Blue" as it calmly swims on by. It's a huge contrast to how I'd expect a white shark of this size to behave. It's basically like an enormous docile hippo just out for a swim. It makes me think that maybe all this time that sharks have been eating people, maybe they've just been hugging people with their mouths in a kind of "welcome to the ocean."

  1. That thing is massive. Bruce the shark wasn't an exaggeration.
No way would I slip outside of the cage though. And after what's happened off our coastline lately, I'm not even going in the water.

    1. That's made national news (the shark attacks in the Carolina waters). Some scientists are saying that warming oceans are causing the shark's food to come closer to the shore which is drawing in the sharks. I think being attacked by a shark would be a very stressful situation.

  2. Is it that time of year again? I should have realized with all the shark movies out again. That big one on the video looks like an evil submarine.

    1. It does look as big as a submarine. Is it the teeth that make it evil? It can't help but smile.

  3. I love Deep Blue!

Also, i LOLd at the hugging with their mouths, bit. You should illustrate that because it would be hilarious. Kind of like the Bloggess's "hugs are just strangles you haven't finished"

  4. That is one big shark. Yikes.

My sister loves Shark Week. When she comes to visit me next month, she wants to go swim with the sharks. I am less enthusiastic about this idea.

    1. On one of the shark week specials, two guys went swimming with a bunch of bull sharks. One was attacked and had to be pulled from the water bleeding. I think swimming with the sharks is as dangerous as it sounds.

  6. I have a healthy respect for sharks, who have much more to fear from us than the other way around. But I won't go near the water if I hear cello music.

  7. Ah yes, the thing that has made my brother work his tail off. (There's always some last minute thing he has to work on or tweak or whatever.)

  9. Sharks are a big fear of mine as my son is always swimming and he has to have an ocean , I mean the backyard pool is not good enough for him.
I am always praying for his safety. This video is kind of reassuring.

  10. I used to do some volunteer work at the local aquarium and I can tell you that nobody knows more about sharks then kids. They LOVE sharks! But with the increased shark attacks at beaches (or just more humans in the water), they still scare me. And of course the movie Jaws made way too deep an impression on me. Still, some of this week's shark documentaries sound like fun so I know I'll watch a couple.
