1) Merida's flaming red hair. You just have to see it.
2) At last, a female protagonist in the Pixar line of movies. I guess "Elastigirl" kinda/sorta counts, but Merida is better.
3) I saw animated haggis!
4) I saw a witch who used a cauldron as an answering machine!
5) The queen's hair with the two pony tails looked really cool.
6) And the lesson that the most important thing between a parent and a child may be communication. In other words, both sides need to really just stop and listen and then comprehend.
7) Bagpipes. I love bagpipes. More please.
8) Pixar animation. It gives me goosepimples.

ReplyDeleteI saw Brave yesterday. Loved it! And Merida's hair was just fantastic -- so much texture and movement! Pixar animation just keeps getting better and better, and their stories remain top notch.
ReplyDeleteI'm taking my Mum to see Brave next week, because I spent the whole movie thinking: "How good would this be to watch with my Mum?"
Looks like another Pixar classic. It doesn't open over here until the middle of August!!!

A couple of critics said the story and script was substandard. I haven't seen it but with Pixar, I don't see how that is possible.

ReplyDeleteI hope you didn't go see it by yourself. A 40-year-old guy seeing a kids movie alone just seems creepy. That's why I wait for DVD or Netflix (if at all) to watch these kind of things.

ReplyDeleteI think because so many Pixar films are home runs I had extremely high expectations. Wall-E might be the best animated film ever made; I consider it the best film of 2008. Finding Nemo is a fantastic film and Toy Story a genre redefining piece of cinema. With that in mind I was a bit disappointed. That is not to say Brave is bad. Far from it, it is a nice little film. I thought the script was a bit heavy on the pratfalls but beyond that it was pretty good. It was better than the Cars movies but not in the elite tier. Of course the animation always looks good with Pixar but I didn't think the 3d brought too much to the table (it wasn't bad but I think I would have enjoyed it just as much in 2d.)
ReplyDeleteQuestion for anyone who might have been paying attention. I caught two overt references to other Scottish films, Braveheart and The Wicker man. Did I miss any other films? I was surprised that there were no Macbeth references.
I'm soooo excited to see this movie! First off, red hair. Need I say more? Second, bag pipes! Yes, bag pipes! And third, er... it just looks fun ;)

ReplyDeleteI very much approved of the amount of nudity in this movie. Also, it reinforced how much i love bears and why i want to be a wear-bear. And the soundtrack was great.

LOL! We saw this over the weekend and LOVED it! Seriously... her hair ROCKS! I love it. And she is a great heroine! So many great things in this movie!

ReplyDeleteI felt about 1/3 of the way through, I could see the pattern and how it would likely play out. But, in spite of that, I enjoyed it. Mama bear's mannerisms were great! I also really liked the way the mother and daughter grew over the course of the show.
Looks like with R's return, our movie plans might not work out like we wanted - at least not at my house. :(
I can't wait to watch Brave. It's going to be soo good.

As far as the animation goes, the trailer of the movie has already taken my breath away. What glorious masses of hair!

Wasn't it just awesome! I have to admit that since I was watching it with all 4 of my kids (including 2 teen daughters) I might have cried a couple of times. Yep, I'm living this movie and I'm not Merida. *sigh*
