Recreational drugs are bad but if you use them please don't participate on a panel for The Walking Dead. The Talking Dead cluster f*ck examined.

Last night's episode of Talking Dead, the talk show hosted by the Nerdist's own Chris Hardwick, had a panel of guests that included Marilyn Manson. This was a HUGE mistake. Within about five minutes, it was painfully obvious that Marilyn Manson was completely high on something. It was difficult to understand anything that came out of his mouth or to follow his logic which at times completely failed to connect with anything relevant to the show or just seemed so insane and discombobulated, you wondered where it was coming from. He'd say something that took two to three minutes to explain and the entire time you're trying to see the connection between Native Americans and colonization, World War Z, and the supposed role reversal of characters in the movie Training Day. Like seriously...it made NO SENSE AT ALL.

Here, you try to make sense of these comments:
Marilyn Manson: "The Governor had strict rules, whether they were good or not. You know, it's our opinion morally or just questionably. Just Rick didn't have any hardcore rules, until now he's started with those three questions. So Rick is kind of realizing politics need to be involved. it's almost starting a new world. It's like when people came to American and killed all the Indians. It's the zombies."
Chris Hardwick in response: "No, it's not like that at all."

Marilyn Manson regarding Carol killing Karen and David: "I think she's trying to be judge and jury, while Rick is trying to be civil. And he's more let's all decide, but he fell apart. And so you've got someone like her, and she's burning those bodies. She's suddenly like a feminist Suffragette City burning bras. I don't think it was personal."
Chris Hardwick in response: "I don't know if burning bras is the same as burning human beings alive."
Marilyn Manson in response to Chris: "No, but I think the recklessness of it. She was just making decisions on her own emotions. She's mad about all the things in her life. Maybe she hasn't gotten laid in awhile. She's like menstruating. Who knows what's going on?"
Chris Hardwick in response: "I'm not sure if I support those last two theories."
Because it's a live show, they obviously couldn't get rid of him. And Chris Hardwick tried his best to mitigate the damage by talking over him and keeping the questions aimed at Jack Osbourne and Gale Anne Hurd. However, it made me think of how incredibly selfish "being high" and then participating on a panel happens to be. You've got legions of fans who watch this show and want to discuss topics like 1) what the hell is going on with Carol and why has she become a psychopath? and 2) who is the voice on the radio and does that mean there's another camp out there that's managed to not only hold off the zombies but has the ability to broadcast over the radio, and 3) do you think Carol would go all psychopathic on Daryl (given that she has love for Daryl) if he came down with everyone else's plague?

If I had paid money to see this panel (like at a Comic Con) I would seriously be pissed off.

Now, I don't think that a public appearance by a stoned Marilyn Manson on any show or in any place could possibly damage his music sales or his reputation. On the contrary, it might actually grow as groupies of his would flock to one of his interests, zombies, even if they already weren't fans of the show. However, how can you possibly have any kind of intelligent discussion on any topic, let alone zombie fiction, when one person is continuously interrupting with nothing relevant to say because their mind is basically shot?

I guess this is one thing I never thought about regarding drug use. Yeah, recreational drugs are bad, and I choose not to use them. But people that do use recreational drugs should also choose not to be dicks and try to carry on conversations with sober people.

  1. Dude,

I'm totally digging it and that was, like, a Rad post, man.

    :)

  2. That sounds painful to watch. I haven't watched very many of these discussion shows, but I watched a couple for Sons of Anarchy since I started watching that series. It's highly entertaining when people know what they are talking about.

You know the person who suggested Marilyn Manson as a panelist is in deep trouble right now.

  3. They invited Marilyn Manson - they were expecting someone normal? And they paired him with Gale Anne Hurd? Really odd combination.
I don't understand drug use either, Michael. Never tried any, never will.

  4. I agree with Alex..obviously not normal. Maybe that was the plan.

  5. I'm not sure using recreational drugs is the same as being so stoned one is incoherent. One can have a beer and not be drunk...

But really... I agree with Alex, anyone who'd name himself after Charles Manson isn't right in the head to begin with.

  6. That sounds like when ABC had Eminem in the booth for a college football game and he was all stoned. Who thought it was a good idea to put a rapper in a booth with an old fart like Brent Mussberger in the first place must have been nuts. Anyway, I'm sure production assistants and the like knew Manson was high and they should never have let him on the air but someone probably thought it'd make great TV.

  7. I'm confused. Is Manson on that show? Wait. I don't want to know.

  8. Now that must have been extremely painful to watch.

  9. If they invited Marilyn Manson, not known for his intelligence, what did they expect? Celebrities can be horribly dull and a waste of time. (I dislike talk shows for this reason)

  10. I knew it was going to be fucked up after the first little promo during the WD episode. As soon as Manson opened his mouth I was like "this was a bad decision by someone"

  11. Sounds like an interesting/confusing discussion.

  12. Stoned, drunk or high, none of them are much fun if you're the sober having to listen to them.

  13. Too bad they couldn't get rid of him. It would have made the show exciting rather than frustrating. Just have security come and lead him out.

  14. Drunk or sober, just don't play the menstruation card when describing why a woman does or doesn't do something. Ever. It's the revelation of a small mind.

  15. It's sad that someone is so out of it that they don't realize that their comments are incoherent. The dangers of drugs...

Sounds like Chris Hardwick deserves kudos for trying to keep things on track.

  16. Perhaps Talking Dead shouldn't have been so dumb as to have expected Manson to have carried on any kind of relevant discussion. He's a musician for god's sake. It's pretty much up in the air what they're going to do- be so high they can barely function or decide to be sober. Usually it's be high so why bother with them? AMC should have known better.

  17. Where have I been? I thought Manson was still in clink? Sounds very off - putting to say the least.

  18. You really hit it on the nail when you state that getting high and then participating on a panel (or anything involving other people, for that matter) is selfish. But I have such a low opinion of Manson that I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't high, his brain has just turned into moldy Swiss cheese.

  19. Well, he did have a couple of lucid moments that were shocking, lol. I still haven't figured out why they had him on the show at all. Kudos to Chris for damage control though. It was fun watching him think so quickly.

    .....dhole

  20. I'd rather listen to Russell Brand.

  21. I completely agree with you. Thank you for posting this. I don't care if I'm not cool by saying drugs suck. I absolutely hate it when someone is high and they get on TV or spew their garbage on YouTube. I want to listen to coherent conversation, of which Marilyn Manson is great at when he ISN'T high. It doesn't do him any favours going on TV fully baked.

And well done to the presenter for keeping things real. Even though the other guests probably do recreational drugs as well, at least they have the sense not do do so when they're going to be on telly.

It's such a shame as Manson really does often have great things to say when sober.
