Breaking Dawn concept art looks really damn cool

Okay, I haven't seen Breaking Dawn Part 2 yet in the theater. But it is on my "to do" list along with "Lincoln." I was perusing io9 (one of my favorite websites) and came across this concept art. Those of you who follow and read my blog regularly already know that I like to dabble with art and that I own some art books. So naturally, I clicked on the concept art for the movie, and it looks pretty damn cool.
I tried to read the original "Twilight" book in 2008. I went to the book store across the street and picked up a copy, and I remember really looking forward to it because it had to be an excellent book if so many people loved it. I remember feeling disappointed by it, and I stopped about a third of the way through. But I did go and see the first two movies. One of the things that I liked about Meyer's vampires are their strange powers. I hadn't seen that in other vampire books (aside from what I consider to be normal vampire powers). You do get some of that in Anita Blake but it's more or less reserved for ancient vampires. In Meyer's books, the vampires are more like super heroes, and I think that's just really cool.

My friend went to Twilight with his wife. He tweeted: @MichaelOffutt OMG. I paid for the whole seat #breakingdawn2 but only used the edge!

So have you seen Breaking Dawn 2? What do you think of this concept art? Did you like the way Meyer's vampires have super powers?

  1. Michael, you do more than dabble. You're a very accomplished artist. I haven't seen BD2. I doubt it'll still be in theaters around Christmas which is when I'll be back in the States. I love the concept art of the movie. So far as super powers...it's be had to come up with a new one.

  2. Now that I've seen that concept art I don't have to see the movie right? I haven't seen any of them. You didn't miss much with the rest of the first book. I mean she glosses over the big vampire fight at the end, what a letdown. And really I hated that the vampires were like the X-Men. Vampires have their own rich heritage that you don't need to steal from superheroes.

  3. The art is cool. I haven't read the book, but I saw the first movie. It was just OK for me.

  4. Very cool art! I love it.

I enjoyed breaking dawn part 2 better than the previous four movies. It's worth a watch in the theaters.

  5. I watched the first movie with my wife, but that was enough to inoculate us against seeing/reading anything else. My wife -really- hated it. I was kind of surprised at the amount of dislike, actually.

  6. I'm almost embarrassed to admit it, but I've seen all the movies with my mom and sisters. They are HUGE fans, and I like spending time with them. The series got better as the movies progressed and the last installment was worth the ticket.

Even when I read the books, the last was my favorite. Perhaps it's because Bella becomes a real person in that last one. She finally has confidence and doesn't tick me off.

As for the books. I read them all, but never felt the need to buy them. Meyers other book The Host is one of my all time favorites though. I did buy that one and have read it more times than I should admit (just skip the first 100 pages and get to the desert.)

  7. I just don't find this story very appealing. Saw the first movie and thought it was tolerable, but the second movie was painful to watch. Sorry.

  8. I've not seen any of the movies or read the books. But, this concept art you've shown is fantastic. I do like that.

Not so sure about vampires with super powers. But hey, the undead seem to get a few extras when they cross over, so. . .perhaps it evens the 'battle-field'.

  9. Everyone makes fun of this franchise, while Ms. Meyer laughs all the way to the bank.

I read all four books and saw the movies. Aside from anything else, I figure if you're a writer you owe it to yourself to see what's hot (that said, I draw the line at 50 Shades - didn't read it and don't want to.)

Thought the first movies, while pretty true to the books weren't that good, but the last one was far more interesting. Either I didn't remember it well enough or they changed the end a tiny bit, but enough to have me going 'what the heck?'. I like it that they 'got me'. Also, there were finally some new and more interesting characters. I love Joe Anderson.

  10. Wow, that concept art is beautiful. I especially like 3rd one down. Really cool and different. I saw the movie and enjoyed it. Looking forward to read what you think. :)

  11. Beautiful artwork! Yes...I read the books and have seen all the movies. I assume that you have read Anne Rice...I do love her vampire books so much more but I must say the the last two movies in this series is the best, especially the last one...I do wish though that the makers of this series... on film would have found a better cast.

  12. I did see the movie. That concept art is stunning. As you might guess, I'm cool with super- powers for vampires. It makes it fun.

  13. I don't know. I like the second and third one down, that's about it. I read the books, saw the first movie. I can wait to stream the rest when it comes out.

  14. What a funny tweet!

And the art is AWESOME... some people (like yourself) have sooooo much talent it's sick...

  15. I think more women liked the books and movies than men. I'm surrounded by women at work and as a romance writer, and most of them were voracious about the books. I didn't read any of them, and the leads in the first movie made me cringe. No more Twilight movies for me.

  16. What an eye you have for art, Michael -- yet another talent you can be proud of.

I haven't read the books (picked one up at the bookstore and just couldn't get into the misunderstood high school girl perspective), but maybe soon I catch all three (four?) of the movies.

  17. I saw the headline for that article on io9 but didn't click on it. It's been a busy day.

I haven't read the books, and I've only seen the movies that have been on cable. Meh. But my niece loves them. Her best friend's birthday party was a screening of the movie with all her friends at a local theater, and they were so thrilled.

I can't totally hate the books, though. I remember just after the first movie came out a conversation amongst a few girls in an English class at the continuation high school (where the students don't read even when required to), and they had devoured them. Any book that can get those kids to read can't be all bad.

  18. I'll admit it. I enjoyed the Twilight books. Though more than the movies. Kristen Stewart really only has one expression (her acting has been getting better, I do have to admit) and Robert Pattinson was a way better Cedric Diggory.

I went to see the latest movie with one of my friends and it was quite good. Though I wish I hadn't spoiled the ending for myself. I watched a reaction video with spoilers because I didn't think I was going to be seeing it for a while. Of course, she asked me if I wanted to go almost right afterward. -.- I also went to see New Moon in theaters for a friend's birthday. I remember that one's ending quite well. NEW MOON was my favorite book of the four, but I don't think the movie came close.

I agree with Charity that THE HOST was better.

  19. Hi Michael,

We are still waiting for Breaking Dawn Part 2, to arrive in Britain. I know my son is keen to see it. Maybe he will pay for my ticket.

    The concept art is awesome.

  20. I'm a Twi-hard through and through. I've seen BD Part 2 and quite enjoyed it, though I find I usually enjoy the Twilight movies more the 2nd time I see them for some reason.

  21. I'm not a fan of the Twilight series, but that concept art is pretty fabulous.

  22. Nah, I'm staying away from this. I saw the Twilight movie and wasn't impressed. The artwork is cool though.

  23. Sorry, but I think her vamps are all ridiculous. There's nothing remotely interesting about them or the stories. As for the films, I can't abide bad acting and bad f/x so after one I was done.

  24. I have to agree with PT in terms of the "glossing over the big fight." That was a serious let-down! It would be like if Voldemort and the Death Eaters came up to the palace and Harry walked out and he and Voldy had a quiet chat and went their separate ways.

I haven't seen any of the Twilight films in theaters. I saw the first two with my sister. I think I'll wait for them all to come out on DVD so we can watch them at home. That way we can Mystery Theater 3000 that stuff, and talk as much as we like.
