I fear doing interviews.
ReplyDeleteI fear rejection as well. I imagine doing a book signing, and no one shows up. I think that would be a nightmare come true.

ReplyDeletePersonally, I get a good deal of satisfaction from just writing a story or novel. So, if people don't like it, well, that's just their loss isn't it ;)

WHY are you writing for?
The only thing I fear is that I will have things left that I want to do when I die. That's almost certainly true. But having faced death once before, I don't really fear that, either.
I was so afraid when I first started blogging that people would comment that what I wrote was stupid, boring or trite. Thank God no one did. But I will say, after reading some nasty anonymous comments from people on other blogs, I don't think it wouldn't bother me now. I figure, if you don't like what you read, you can move on.
ReplyDeletePeople not liking my art? Never being noticed for talent or originality? Yes, I think that would hurt. We all want to be validated and believe we matter to some people at least, if not the whole world! I don't think you need worry about that. People already appreciate your writings on your blog and I am sure many will like your book.
I fear being old and looking back on my life and realizing I never had the courage to invest in myself by taking the chances necessary for success.

ReplyDeleteI love that picture. I guess I had one advantage in that my very first stories were posted on literotica... so I got to see that people wanted to read them. Now, whether I could write good enough to get published or whether people would want to pay good money for them or how the hell I could FIND said audience were other questions entirely, but I believe they are out there. They are out there for all of us.
ReplyDeleteMy toes curl with embarrassment every single time I submit something. Still, the first and most important person I need to please is myself. Art is self-expression, and as long as it means something to me - and is the best work that I can do - then I'm satisfied. :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is why I'm hugely grateful to anyone who reads and likes my novels, even when they're just in manuscript form and they are only a few people who read them. And judging by the popularity of your blog, Michael, I think you have nothing to fear.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was in high school, we were asked this question. Everyone was answering with phobias and the like, and I couldn't think of anything, so I said nothing. heh
All of my fears have to do with my kids, so, still, it's hard to answer that.

ReplyDelete@Grumpy: THEN DON'T DO THEM! Building platform does not increase sales. Maybe Pagel has some definitive argument against my statement but show me the scientific evidence that states otherwise? There isn't any. It's not something you can really measure. But if you hate doing something then you really shouldn't participate in it or find another way to go about it. For example...I'm not entering the flash fiction contest but I'm helping out by sending emails and working a spreadsheet of all the entries and coordinating who wins out of groups of ten. In return, I get some blog follow love.
@Andrew: I think you fear that George Lucas will stop reissuing Star Wars so that you will no longer have a reason to attend screenings at Skywalker Ranch and then rub it in our faces.

I don't really mean to be rubbing it in people's faces. Is that how it comes off? Okay, that actually scares me, that I could be coming off as "ha ha, I got ice cream and you didn't."
Great interview. I don't normally read sci fi but I think I'll be making an exception for Slipstream. What do I fear? Having my fears overtake my passion for writing. Yes, I fear fear. I'm working on that... :-)

I guess I can't be afraid of rejection since I already put myself out there every week and get rejected on a regular basis. Maybe I'm developing a thick skin like a crocodile or something. Good luck and I'll check out the link.

ReplyDeleteI completely fear public speaking, performance in front of an audience, that sort of thing. Makes me feel a little queasy inside!

I'm with you on the fear about no one but me caring about my art. If so, then I suppose I should just write it for me and be done with it.
ReplyDeleteI fear that too. And I keep editing, and editing, and editing, trying to make sure my story will move others.
ReplyDeleteSuccess can be a scary thing. My biggest fear is that each story I produce will be the last I ever produce.
