Frank Frazetta was an awesome painter and inspired the likes of Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, and other artists to give fantasy a look that would set it apart from other genres. I have been one of the people who wanted to see his work done well on the big screen as a live-action film. I mean, Peter Jackson did it for the Lord of the Rings artists Alan Lee, John Howe, and Ted Nasmith. Well, it looks like Robert Rodriguez is finally going to be the guy that completes the task for Frazetta.
Early next year, the director will start working on Fire and Ice, which you may recall was an animated film back in 1983 from director Ralph Bakshi. But this new film based on Frazetta's paintings will be live action, because Rodriguez wants it to look "like you just stepped into one of his paintings, where you get to see his world, and how he saw people, anatomy, and composition and color."
Here's the movie's official synopsis:

Here's the movie's official synopsis:
From his stronghold in Ice Peak, the evil Nekron sends forth a wave of deadly glaciers, forcing humanity to retreat to Fire Keep, a kingdom ruled by a generous king. When King Jarol's daughter Teegra is kidnapped, young warrior Larn teams with the mysterious and legendary Dark Wolf, to rescue the princess and the realm from Nekron's evil sorcery. How would you feel if a movie was made that captured the essence of the concept art featured below?
I've never heard of Frank Frazetta. From what I can see here, he's a talented artist.
ReplyDeleteYou can definitely see where Boris Vallejo found his inspiration. The works are very similar in style.
ReplyDeleteIt would be very interesting to see what the film comes out like...
I would LOVE it.
ReplyDeleteDamn, those are some pretty intense paintings. The chick in the gold lame bikini reminds me a little bit of Princess Leia.
ReplyDeleteTheresa: I think he was a talented artist (he's dead now). I mean he's the first guy that really explored this kind of sword and sorcery art.
ReplyDeleteDRC: I agree.
Briane P: I also agree.
Marjorie: hahah I hadn't thought of that.
A live-action Fire and Ice? Sweet!
ReplyDeleteI know we're getting a John Carter treatment soon as well. Add a new Conan on top of that, we're about to be bombarded with scantily clad heroes from fantastical worlds.
Very interesting post! I’m glad to be a new follower and have left a response to your comment on Bird’s-eye View at http://michellefayard.blogspot.com/2011/07/getting-blog-comments-to-work-for-you.html.
ReplyDeleteI love his art, although the stories surrounding his estate since his passing have been sad. I do think imagery in movies is very important, if it's striking enough, it can make a movie worth seeing for no other reason.
ReplyDeleteSo, I'd see it.
I think they look . . . cold. Hate to be in the kingdom of ice in a bikini.
ReplyDelete;)
BTW, thanks for posting the countdown.
That is some art. Also the stories of princesses being kidnapped and then rescued reminds me of childhood stories. In Hindu mythology there are a lot of stories and even to this day there are artists who draw pictures and talk about epics as they are not literate enough to write the stories. Somtimes art does express more than words can. Great Post.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who's spent more than his fair share of years involved in the comics industry in some form or another, I've been acquainted with Frazetta's work for a couple of decades. I do like his work, although I prefer Julie Bell's. And, um, this other guy whose name isn't coming to me, at the moment.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, although I would certainly see a movie based on his art, I believe in the story over the art. Always have. Yes, I pretty much hate Image comics and have since they started. Can't really stand McFarlane. But I'm veering off topic, so I'll stop before I find a soap box somewhere.
Die! Why won't you DIE!
